Six days before the biggest night of his career, Mateo Varga is still hitting pads at the same small gym in Northvale where he started training at 16. His coach, Ruben Salas, calls out combinations; Varga answers with short, sharp punches and a low kick that echoes off the walls.

On Saturday, the 29-year-old lightweight will fight champion Kofi Adomako for the Northern Cage Championship title at the harbor arena in Port Alden. With 9,000 tickets sold, organizers say it is the largest mixed martial arts event ever staged in the country.

A careful final week

Varga’s training camp has run for ten weeks, with sparring partners brought in to mimic Adomako’s tall, rangy style. This week the work is lighter: technical drills, video study and recovery.

The hard work is done. Now it is about staying sharp, staying healthy and keeping his head quiet.

Varga, who has won 14 of his 16 professional fights, says his weight is under control. After a hard weight cut left him drained two years ago, he began working with a nutritionist and has stayed close to the limit throughout camp. “I walk into this week feeling strong, not empty,” he said.

The champion arrives

Adomako, 31, has not lost in four years and has defended his title three times. He arrived in Port Alden on Monday and held an open workout on the waterfront that drew several hundred fans. He has said little about his opponent, beyond calling him “a good fighter who has not yet met a great one.”

Analysts expect a clash of styles. Adomako likes to fight at range and wear opponents down over five rounds; Varga is at his best pressing forward and wrestling against the cage.

If Varga gets through the first two rounds without taking heavy damage, this becomes a very interesting fight.

What to expect on fight night

The main card begins at 8 p.m., with ten bouts in total, including three debutants from the Coastal Region. Official weigh-ins take place on Friday morning, and an independent medical team will examine every fighter before they are cleared. Public transport in Port Alden will run extra late services after the event.
