The empty chair on the “Rising Stage” judging panel has been filled. Singer Nora Kell will join the talent show for its seventh season, the producers announced on Monday, ending weeks of speculation among fans.
Kell, 34, replaces Felix Raines, who left the panel this summer after six seasons to focus on his own tour. She will sit alongside returning judges Marco Vellani and choreographer Aisha Lund, who revealed the news in a short video recorded in front of the three empty chairs in the studio.
From contestant to judge
The appointment has a neat symmetry. Kell first appeared on national television as a teenager in a regional talent contest, finishing third. She has since released four albums, and her single last spring was the most-played song on national radio for eight weeks.
I know exactly how it feels to stand on that stage with your hands shaking. I want to be the judge I needed when I was 17: honest, but kind.

Producers say Kell will also mentor singers in the later rounds, a new feature this season. Each judge will coach up to five acts through the live shows.
What changes this season
Beyond the new face, the format is changing. Viewers will be able to vote through the broadcaster’s app from the first live show, and one act each week will be saved by a combined vote of the judges and the studio audience.
We wanted the audience in the room to matter again. Some of our best moments came from people who were there that night.
